How does the world’s most expensive car market work? Manufacturers of luxury brands produce a limited series of supercar or hypercar models (usually up to 20-40 items) for well-heeled individuals to buy and later sell them to collectors in a couple of years. Price starts to rise when demand is higher than supply.
Over the years, such ultra-exclusive models increase in value many-fold and can be compared with works of art produced by famous artists. In this post, we would like to introduce you to the Top 10 Most Expensive Cars in 2022. Welcome to a breathtaking journey!

Most Expensive Cars in the World
Our 2022 ranking of the most expensive luxury cars includes all varieties you can imagine: from legendary classic cars to respected motorhomes, with several amazing new models released specifically for collectors. These vehicles have a reason to claim the status of the most expensive cars as they are equipped with all the latest state-of-the-industry features and are treated as real works of art that never lose value.
Modern hypercars on our list stand side by side with classic models of the middle of the twentieth century that have remained single copies. They possess those luxurious and truly impressive details that turn an expensive car as a valuable object into a work of art.
So, let’s embark on our glorious journey and make 10 mind-blowing stops to look at the world’s most expensive cars in 2022.
1. Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe — USD 142 million
In May 2022, one of the two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe models (a version of the legendary W196S race car with a rigid roof) was sold for a record-breaking amount.
In collaboration with the auction house Sotheby’s, Mercedes-Benz sold one of its coveted Silver Arrow racing cars for 135 million euros (142 million dollars). The proceeds were allocated to the new Mercedes charity which “will provide young people with educational and research scholarships in the field of environmental sciences and decarbonization,” the press release says.
The value of one of the most impressive and expensive sports cars ever made by the German brand was almost three times the price of Ferrari 250 GTO, a classic model sold in Monterey at an open auction in 2018, and more than twice the estimated $80 million paid for the same GTO at a private sale in 2018.
RM Sotheby’s (acting on behalf of Mercedes-Benz) gathered about 10 (or even fewer) carefully selected collectors of fast expensive cars who were not only rich enough to bid but also met the stringent criteria set by the German car manufacturer. The company wanted to ensure that any person who becomes a Silver Arrows racing car owner would treat it with the same care and attention as a Mercedes. Well, doesn’t it look like the most expensive piece of art that deserves special care?
2. Ferrari 250 GTO — USD 80 million
Ferrari 250 GTO is a classic model that was produced between 1962 and 1964, and this is a two-door Berlinette. The original Ferrari 250 GTO buyers had to be personally approved by Enzo Ferrari before being given the green light to buy the car. Only 36 units were produced, and only a few of them had a second series body.
Each car had Marilyn Monroe’s curves, and most of them were made in Ferrari’s signature red lipstick color. In June 2018, it was rumored that one version of the 1964 car was sold at a private auction for $80 million, making it the most expensive classic car in the world sold privately at that time. Two months later, chassis No. 3413 was sold at an open auction for $48.4 million.
3. Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic — USD 40 million
Bugatti, a French automaker, has produced many million-dollar cars. However, the most expensive item that you can rightly call the queen of the brand is Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic.
In the 1930s and 1940s, more than 700 units of the Bugatti Type 57 were produced – however, only four of them were Type 57SC Atlantic special version. Today, one of the three surviving models belongs to Ralph Lauren, the fashion designer. It’s a jet-black car with wavy lines, and the designer describes it as “moving art.” The previous sale of the Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic took place in California in 2010, when the final bid for the 1936 model reached $30 million. Three years ago, it was resold for $40 million.
4. Ferrari 335 S Spider Scagliettis — USD 36 million
The 1957-58 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scagliettis was the favorite expensive car of some of the world’s greatest historic racers, and no wonder: it reached a speed of up to 300 kilometers per hour. However, only four items were produced, so they are rare as a four-leaf clover. It does not mean they will never be offered for sale, though: in 2016, the 1957 edition of the Ferrari 335 S Spider Scagliettis was auctioned in Paris for 32 million euros (or $36 million at that time).
5. Rolls-Royce Boat Tail — USD 28 million
Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, a modern luxury car, ranks fifth in the world’s most expensive cars list in 2022. Rolls-Royce, a British premium car manufacturer, will manually build three copies – each distinguished by color and additional equipment. According to preliminary estimates, Rolls-Royce Boat Tail will cost 28 million dollars. Boat Tail is the most expensive modern luxury car for traveling along the coast in the open air, inspired by J-class yachts. The journey from concept to completion took four years.
The 5.8-meter-long car is built on the same aluminum spatial platform as the Phantom, Cullinan, and the new Ghost models, and has the same 6.75-liter V-12 engine. In addition, this gorgeous car is different from any other Rolls-Royce on the planet.
“Rolls-Royce believes in complete authenticity, and Boat Tail is the culmination of a four-year collaboration with three of our most special clients,” said Torsten Müller- Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce.
The “special clients” included Beyoncé and Jay Z, the well-known couple.
The roof canopy of Rolls Royce Boat Tail is not transformable, but you can remove it completely. The owner can open the back deck by simply pressing the button. The rear of the vehicle is lifted automatically, and a parasol is opened.
Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is the first car equipped with an extended parasol and a cocktail table. Moreover, it has a separate champagne fridge specifically designed to store the bottles of the owner’s favorite wine, Armand de Brignac. As you see, this luxurious car would be a perfect choice for those who appreciate true luxury.
The torpedo of this rich car is also decorated with an elite Swiss Bovet watch which can be worn on your wrist or mounted on the dashboard.
6. Aston Martin DBR1 — USD 22.6 million
Aston Martin DBR1 is another unique classic creation by Aston Martin. This expensive and exclusive car went down in history as one of the three 1950s cars that won the World Sports Car Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the same year. A green frog with a lattice resembling the jaw of a Koi carp is a classic car with character. It was last auctioned at Sotheby’s in Monterey in 2017 and was finally bought for $22.6 million.
7. Bugatti La Voiture Noire — USD 18.7 million
The seventh place in the ranking of the world’s most expensive supercars is taken by another Bugatti model called La Voiture Noire (“Black Car” in French), a wonderful supercar made of carbon fiber. The design of La Voiture Noire is a modern interpretation of the Type 57 SC Atlantic created in the 1930s.
According to the well-known automotive edition Top Gear, this expensive car was created specifically for a Bugatti enthusiast and collector “fascinated by the Atlantic”.
The look of the car was supposed to be an advanced work of a genius, and the beauty of Bugatti Chiron added inspiration during the design of the hypercar model.
As a result, the high price of Bugatti La Voiture Noire ($18.7 million) results from two main factors: a perfectly crafted carbon fiber housing and a powerful engine. And that’s the price of a new car that will only increase with age when it is resold.
In addition to these two factors, careful attention to detail truly deserves special praise. To date, only one Noire model has been created, and it is rumored that the happy owner is Cristiano Ronaldo, the best striker of Manchester United. But it’s nothing more than a rumor.
8. Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta — USD 17.6 million
In 2018, the price of an exclusive custom hypercar, Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta, was finally revealed to instantly make it the most expensive new car in the world. However, Rolls-Royce Boat Tail stole the title later with its jaw-dropping price of $28 million.
As the name suggests, the Zonda HP Barchetta is a unique model with a special price of $17 million.
The new creation was handed over to a very lucky (and very rich) buyer during a special event.
This expensive car was made by order of Oleg Egorov, the owner of TopCar Design. It was painted in total black with a combination of matt and glossy carbon surfaces, and a gold stripe passing along the central line. It was also supplemented with golden brake calipers and suspension components to match the theme of the exterior.
Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta Ultra Rare Speedster is equipped with a 7.3 liter V12 engine designed by AMG. The same engine is used in the latest versions of Zonda, and it works in combination with a 6-speed manual transmission.
9. Rolls-Royce Sweptail — USD 13 million
Rolls-Royce Sweptail which exists in a single copy was presented at the 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, a luxury and expensive car showroom. It took four years to build, and the customer that ordered it is unknown.
Rolls-Royce Sweptail was not originally created for a specific reason: it was just an order. The car, once considered the most expensive one in the world, has conquered the hearts of all motorists throughout the planet.
One of the best features of this expensive car is the combination of old and new: modern luxury combined with shades of glamor from the 1920s and 1930s. We are talking about the characteristics of the classic Rolls-Royce silhouette combined with innovation and technology. Despite everything we know about it, there is one thing we don’t know: its owner. This unique and very expensive car is really one of a kind.
10. Bugatti Centodieci — USD 9.6 million
Bugatti Centodieci Hypercar (based on the EB110 model from the early 1990s) was introduced a few years ago, and a limited edition of 10 items was promised. It was only distributed among long-time customers of Bugatti, including the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. The cost of each copy is set by the manufacturer at $9.6 million.
According to TheSupercarBlog, the Japanese dealer of exotic and cool expensive cars has already announced the sale of one of the future limited-edition Bugatti Centodieci hypercars for an incredible 14 million dollars. Not only is this much higher than the original price of this expensive car but also it hasn’t even been produced yet. Bugatti Centodieci collected only advance payments from the buyers but did not give them anything in return. The Japanese dealer will hand over the brand-new hypercar to the buyer.
Since we are talking about Bugatti Centodieci, we should mention that it is much more than just an exclusive product. The stunning expensive car is created to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the automaker (Centodieci is “110” in Italian) and has a striking angular shape, which is directly inspired by the EB110 model. Bugatti EB110 is one of the most important supercars of the 1990s and the only serial model built by the brand under the leadership of Italian businessman Romano Artioli.
Bugatti Centodieci Hypercar is powered by a brutal W-16 four-turbine engine that yields 1,600 horses and has a red line of 7,000 revolutions per minute. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.4 seconds, and the maximum speed is limited by electronics to 390 km/h.
