Digital Nomad Visas to Sixteen Countries

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, countries that used to rely on foreign tourists are suffering more than others are. The tourist industry has almost come to a standstill and tourism-oriented countries are incurring heavy losses.

For this reason, the Governments of these countries are looking for new ways to attract foreigners who would spend their money there thus contributing to the local economies. One of the instruments of attracting foreign nationals is the so-called digital nomad visa. It allows the holder to stay in a foreign country for an extended period if he or she is able to sustain him/ herself.

Digital Nomad Visa

Below we list 16 countries that are pushing this relatively new immigration instrument. The costs of obtaining a digital nomad visa differ from one country to another and they are quite negligible in some cases.

What is a digital nomad visa?

A digital nomad visa is an immigration instrument that is sometimes referred to as a ‘remote worker visa’. It allows people who work from home to relocate to a country with a nicer climate and work from there. A digital nomad visa will spare you the trouble of applying for a residence permit. Besides, the holder of a digital nomad visa does not normally become a tax resident of the country he or she is working from.

A digital nomad visa will make your stay in a foreign country legal for a longer period in comparison to a tourist visa. However, in most cases, you will not be eligible to apply for a job in the foreign country. It is expected that you will make a living while working remotely for an employer domiciled in another country.

Alternatively, you can demonstrate having a passive income of a certain amount to obtain a digital nomad visa. In any event, every corresponding immigration program will have a minimum guaranteed income requirement. You will have to supply a job contract and/ or a bank statement when applying for a digital nomad visa.

In addition to that, all programs require medical insurance and a clean police record. Naturally, you will also have to fill out the application form and supply a valid international passport, a couple of photographs, and some other documents. Please note that all national digital nomad visa programs allow taking your dependent family members with you. If this is the case, you will have to have a bit higher guaranteed income. Besides, you will have to supply documents certifying the relations of kin.

16. South Korea (forthcoming)

South Korea

At the end of March 2021, the South Korean Government announced an intention to launch a digital nomad visa program. This sort of visa will allow foreign IT specialists and other remote workers to live and work in the country even though they are not employed by Korean companies. The visa is going to have a long validity term.  Please note that the Korean immigration authorities are going to conduct serious due diligence procedures with respect to the foreign employer. They want to make sure that this opportunity is not misapplied.

The falling number of foreign tourists is only one problem that the Korean authorities aim to solve with the help of this immigration instrument. The demographic situation in the country is threatening. In 2020, the population of South Korea grew smaller than the year before. If the current tendency continues, the number of South Koreans may be reduced by half by 2060.
